Momentum Waikato's response to the Covid-19 situation

Published on 30 March, 2020

Kia Ora to all Momentum Waikato supporters.

So you know, here's how we are responding to the Covid-19 situation.

As a member of the Waikato Funders Network, Momentum Waikato is looking to support core agencies and frontline services across the region by joining in on its coordinated efforts such as identifying gaps in provision and the proposed single application process for all local funders. This will amplify the role we already play ‘connecting and convening’ for people who need help and advice.

Specifically, Momentum Waikato has accelerated our new-ish partnership with the Wise Group at the Houchen Retreat in Glenview.

This facility, which we recently took over, is in the process of becoming Wise Group’s new Wellness Village for mental health and community support, but the approaching virus emergency prompted them to set up the ‘Houchen Hub’ to provide immediate support for the vulnerable in Hamilton’s communities.

Staff there started cooking and freezing meals last week ready for distribution to Hamilton's most vulnerable during Covid-19 Alert Level 4. Last Friday we donated two new chest freezers to increase their ability to get ahead of demand.

Beyond that, the Momentum Waikato Board has provided Chief Executive Kelvyn Eglinton with a discretionary fund to facilitate whatever Wise Group needs at that location at this time.

Our other big project of course is the Waikato Regional Theatre. All confirmed funding is secure, but the shutdown will likely slow down contractual discussions that are currently underway, so the start of construction that was due to happen next month will be at least slightly delayed.

Meanwhile Kelvyn is actively encouraging central and local government across the Waikato to look at all projects - civil, community, affordable housing etc - that are already at 80% or more of their total funding, and then to make a commitment to getting them over the line by filling funding gaps, so they can start as soon as possible and keep their momentum going.

Thanks as ever for your support, we're still go, stay well and we'll see you on the other side.
