One of the joys of my role as Momentum Ambassador is introducing hard-working community organisations to the tools we offer for getting the best value out of their donations and precious ‘rainy day’ reserves.
McKenzie Centre in Hamilton supports children who have disabilities and their families to have full and fulfilling lives, in communities that value them. It was established in 1982 with donations from the McKenzie Education Foundation and the Telethon Trust.
Late last year it established the new McKenzie Centre Fund at Momentum Waikato, securing a resilient ongoing income stream by putting its saved capital into our investment portfolio as a ‘named fund’, and then inviting its supporters and the public to help grow this principal with their own donations.
At the signing of the Fund’s Deed of Gift just before Christmas, Centre Director Trisha Benge said Momentum Waikato “will be a prudent guardian”.
She told us: “this is a forward-thinking initiative with Momentum, that we feel privileged to initiate as a future investment for the children and their whaanau that we support”.
The Centre, which is part of Enrich Group headquartered in Te Awamutu, will use its new investment income to pursue its long-term strategy and growth.
CARE: Stephanie Wacker, an early intervention teacher at McKenzie Centre, works with a child.
Their work is essential. Experiences of early childhood have a later impact on wellbeing. Child development is influenced by individual, family and community factors, and early childhood intervention helps to improve the lives and achieves better long-term outcomes.
We are very happy to welcome the McKenzie Centre to the growing number of trusts working with us to realise the best outcomes from their financial resources.
Many for-purpose organisations have their ‘rainy day fund’ capital sitting in the bank, returning minimal interest.
It makes sense for such entities to put that money into Momentum’s regional endowment fund. Its scale and the expertise of our investment partners Craigs and Forsyth Barr ensure much greater returns, providing the community group with a sustainable income stream and/or capital growth.
Momentum is proud to be partnering with McKenzie Centre, who have helped thousands of children and their families over the last 40 years, we look forward to helping them thrive for many more years to come.
