Margaret Wilson: Why I am a Momentum Waikato trustee

Published on 9 August, 2024

The Waikato has been the home of my family since the 1880s.

For me it has always been a special place because it has a real sense of community.

That is why I joined Momentum Waikato as a Trustee, because it was an opportunity to give back to the community that has given me so much over the years.

The beating heart of any community is its people. The volunteers who give freely of their time to develop the social resources, connections and experiences that make their local patch into a community.

I support Momentum because it has an inter-generational approach to enabling individuals, families and groups to contribute to the future of our community.

It also recognises the importance of building and maintaining institutions that contribute to the wider community. The Waikato Regional Theatre is a good example of ‘thinking ahead’ to provide the region with a facility that will enhance people’s opportunity to experience live performances, with all the wider benefits that brings.

Margaret has held a range of significant local roles, including being the first Dean of Te Piringa Faculty of Law at the University of Waikato, a Deputy Commissioner at the former DHB, and Chair of the former Waikato Plan Committee.

She was a Member of Parliament between 1999 and 2008, during which time she held several Ministerial positions, including Attorney General, as well as the Speaker of Parliament. She also has been a Director of the Reserve Bank and a Law Commissioner.
